On January 22, 2025, the Canadian bulk carrier Manitoulin, spanning 663 feet, became ensnared in dense ice approximately one mile off the coast of Buffalo, New York, as it attempted to return to Sarnia, Ontario, following a wheat delivery. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay commenced ice-breaking efforts on January 23, later joined by the USCGC Neah Bay from Cleveland. A helicopter from Air Station Detroit provided aerial assistance, while the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel Risley from Windsor, Ontario, also participated in the operation. After several days of collaborative efforts, the Manitoulin was successfully freed from the ice on January 25 and escorted through over 20 miles of icy waters to open water. The vessel and its 17 crew members were unharmed and continued their journey to Sarnia, where the ship will remain for the winter.
